Link Builders’ Tool Goes Topsy-Turvy

If you’re one of the folks who use Yahoo Site Explorer as a yardstick by which to judge sites’ values, be aware that Jerry Yang’s company seems to have made an adjustment to the tool without telling anybody.

The link counts Yahoo Site Explorer provides have changed, in essence.  Whether - or if - they’ve gone uniformly up or down hasn’t been determined yet, since people are still becoming aware of the development, and as such, you might want to hold off on making any important link-related deals on the basis of the new info.

As a separate note: now you know not to freak out if your sites seem to have suffered some link-related disaster.  Or at least, you can assume you’re not alone.

But here’s one Yahoo Site Explorer point of reference, anyway, provided by Barry Schwartz.  He posted a picture showing an “inlinks” count of 250,227, and writes, “The 250,000 value shows all links to seroundtable.com, excluding internal links, but to the entire domain.  In contrast to Google Webmaster Tools, which only reports 175,408 links for this domain.”

By comparing your sites’ stats to this example, you may be able to get your bearings faster than the competition and gain some link-building advantages.

Yahoo SiteExplorer used to be a primary resource for checking backlinks for me. For my own sites, I relied on google’s webmaster tools.

SEO Quake and siteexplorer is something that I like to use almost everyday. We should probably move to ask or live for backlink data :))
