I know, I know - you’re not a member of what may be the world’s most famous comedy team, and as a result, this situation may not present much of a learning opportunity. Still, Monty Python has pulled off a huge victory using a type of Internet marketing, and even if imitation is difficult, admiration seems due.
Monty Python took the simple step of launching an official YouTube channel. John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin put together a clip acknowledging all of the content that’s been posted illegally, saying that the clips posted on their new channel will be of better quality, and encouraging people to buy their DVDs.
That’s about it, except for some humor, of course. Making the video probably took three minutes of each man’s time, tops.
The result is astounding. “The Complete Monty Python’s Flying Circus 16-Ton Megaset” now stands as Amazon.com’s number one “mover and shaker” in the TV and movies category, having improved its sales rank from 663 to 3, or by 22,000 percent. No wonder companies try to put John Cleese’s face on everything, right?
If you can’t afford to hire a Python, though, think about the example these comedians set by adopting a good attitude and giving away free samples. And perhaps buy the Monty Python DVDs while you’re at it, because it was a great show.
