That a certain corporate name would have the word “twit” in it . . . well, some would argue that’s no accident. But whether the service is silly and stupid or not, it seems that a company can make money using Twitter, as Dell recently attributed $1 million in revenue to doing precisely this.
According to David Miller, “Dell says Twitter has produced $1 million in revenue over the past year and a half through sale alerts. People who sign up to follow Dell on Twitter receive messages when discounted products are available [through] the company’s Home Outlet Store. They can click over to purchase the product or forward the information to others.”
Since using Twitter is so simple, other companies may want to look into establishing similar approaches. A corporate blogger or spokesperson could easily keep up a Twitter account, or in some cases, even CEOs have been known to get behind the keyboard.
Granted, Dell’s such a huge company that $1 million over the course of 18 months isn’t much to it. An equivalent return at a more normal business might look like a handful of loose change.
Still, the idea’s probably worth looking into, and even if you don’t follow through, try to secure a Twitter account in your company’s name so that no one else can use it to do something unpleasant.
