As we all know, everybody makes mistakes. And when it comes to something kind of minor like typos, a lot of people make mistakes dozens of times per day. So when you’re optimizing for search engine traffic, consider taking typos into account.
Mind you, there are ways to screw this approach up. If your site is rife with typos, you will, to be frank, look like a moron. Stoney deGeyter discusses ways to walk the line.
First, he suggests, “Use your meta tags for the misspellings.” Then, if possible, “Place your misspelled keywords in links from other sites. That may seem a bit dubious, but if someone else is agreeing to link to you and you can get them to spell it wrong, more power to you.”
Another recommendation is to “[u]se PPC. This keeps your site typo free and you can ensure your ad only appears with a misspelled search. Nice. Clean. Easy.”
Finally, well, we get back to the nature of everyone making mistakes. DeGeyter writes, “Strategically place typos in your blog posts. Blogs tend to be less formal and rife with spelling and grammatical errors. This gives you a little more leeway to make a typographical ‘mistake’. You can also place your typo in the URL of your blog posts for a little extra umph.”
After all, money belonging to butter- or sausage-fingered individuals is just as green as anything else you’ll see.
